The Ego is a Membrane: Why \"Killing\" the Self is a Trap

A common element within the spiritual community, and various areas associated with seeking enlightenment, is the obsession with "Ego Dissolution".

Many traditions treat the ego as a bad actor. They view it as the perpetrator of life’s issues, the block preventing unity consciousness, or the element that prevents expansion.

I challenge this.

The Biology of the Spirit

First, we must ask: what is the ego? From my perspective, the ego acts as the barrier between the expression of Source "You" and the expression of Source "Me."

It is analogous to the semi-permeable membrane of a cell. In biology, the membrane and the cell act in unison to form a highly complex organism. The membrane creates a boundary that allows the cell to remain unique enough to be defined as its own, without being separate from the whole.

The Trap of Dissolution

To dissolve the membrane is to discount the expression’s experiential difference. It defies the logic of Unity, which seeks to express all possibilities in an all-encompassing, expansive manner.

Trying to "kill" the ego is often a form of escapism, a method to ignore the somatic, symbolic, and information-rich events that define how your unique expression gets from A to Z.

Without the ego, you cannot be an expression unique to anything else. You return to Source, yes, but you lose the ability to differentiate. You lose the ability to hold the labels of Father, Son, Daughter, or Partner. You remove the meaning gained from your specific set of continuous events.

Integration, Not Destruction

We can try to dissolve it (which, ironically, is often a highly ego-driven activity), or we can integrate it. We must consider what task we give to that semi-permeable membrane. Is it tasked with Defence (keeping everything out)? Or is it tasked with Differentiation (filtering what comes in)?

We can give it a role. We can interpret it as a crucial part of this unique expression's journey.

Don’t try to dissolve your ego. Learn to address it with love and care. Show it that you are safe. Allow it to be the vessel for the rich experience you came here to have.

For the remembrance of sovereignty.
